Having spent much of the year battling data breaches that led to huge information and financial loss, the security industry was likely relieved to see 2011 come to a close. In its annual threat roundup report, Trend Micro (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704) wraps 2011 as “The Year of Data Breaches,” after witnessing large, well-known companies succumb to targeted data breach attacks that not only stained reputations, but caused them significant collateral damage.

Authored by Trend Micro threat researchers, this year’s report revisits past predictions, and summarizes notable threat incidents and security wins throughout 2011.

The mobile threat landscape reached new levels of maturity in 2011. Trend Micro threat researchers tracked a staggering spike in the volume of mobile malware, especially those targeting the Android platform. RuFraud and DroidDreamLight — just two of the most notorious Android malware variants — took much of the spotlight, causing millions of users lost data and money.

The year 2011 was a profitable year for social media spammers and scammers who leveraged the trending topics of social networking sites to improve upon their social engineering and hacking tactics, stealing the data of millions of social networkers worldwide. Consequently, regulators have started demanding that social networking sites implement policies and mechanisms to protect the privacy of their users.

While the number of publicly reported vulnerabilities decreased from 4,651 in 2010 to 4,155 in 2011, exploit attacks evolved with higher complexity and sophistication. Exploit attacks in 2011 were targeted, original, and well controlled, the most notable of which set their sights on CVE-2011-3402, CVE-2011-3544, and CVE-2011-3414, along with a couple of Adobe product zero-day vulnerabilities that were exploited in the wild.

Finally, despite an aggressive cybercriminal landscape, Trend Micro, along with its industry partners and law enforcement authorities achieved some remarkable and strategic wins this year. One of them – Operation Ghost Click – reached success after five years of stealth tracking and working closely with the FBI. Trend Micro, the only security company that was involved, was able to assist the FBI in what was noted as the biggest cybercriminal takedown in history.

“Reflecting back on 2011, I am very proud of what we’ve achieved. But our work is never done. With 3.5 new threats created every second, and as businesses and consumers take the journey to the cloud, the risk of data and financial loss are greater than ever,” said Myla Pilao, Director of Core Technology, Trendlabs Marketing. “As a company (and as an industry), we must continue to evolve and create better, data-centric security products for the post-PC era where users need greater visibility and assurance into who is accessing their data, when, where and how.”

Trend Micro Philippines has highlighted the industry’s first hypervisor “agnostic,” virtualization-aware endpoint security offering: Trend Micro OfficeScan 10.5, the company’s endpoint security solution for medium businesses and enterprises.

Trend Micro OfficeScan 10.5, powered by the Trend Micro™ Smart Protection Network™ infrastructure’s correlated in-the-cloud intelligence, is now designed to solve the challenges unique to endpoints deployed in a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). Based on internal testing, using OfficeScan enables enterprises to more than double the number of virtual machines per VDI host – without sacrificing security.

According to a recent study by the Enterprise Strategy Group, 60 percent of enterprises have a desktop virtualization strategy and 45 percent of them will have virtualized 50 percent of their desktops within the next three years. Despite the smaller economic impact of cleaning or rebuilding infected virtual endpoints, most usage scenarios of virtual desktops have a risk profile nearly identical to that of physical desktops.

The temptation for enterprises is to deploy their existing non-virtualization-aware endpoint security to their virtualized endpoints. Doing so poses significant performance challenges on the shared VDI server hardware, leaving end users negatively impacted. In the end, enterprises are forced to choose between poor VDI Return on Investment (ROI) or poor security along with potential lack of regulatory compliance.

The VDI optimizations introduced in this new release of OfficeScan address these key challenges: Integrating with Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View, OfficeScan 10.5 identifies virtualized endpoints and prevents resource contention by serializing scan operations and security updates, avoiding so called “AV-storms” and the “9:00-AM problem.”

OfficeScan 10.5 enables customers to maximize the number of virtualized desktops per host, contributing to a higher ROI of a customer’s VDI investment without lowering security standards. Additional optimizations leverage VDI provisioning concepts such as base images and linked clones to further reduce the performance impact of security on the VDI environment and support an improved user experience.

“With the upcoming release of OfficeScan with VDI-aware technology, Trend Micro reconfirms its commitment to and leadership in virtualization security,” said Steve Quane, Chief Product Officer, Trend Micro. “With OfficeScan 10.5, customers can realize the full benefits of desktop virtualization. It also meets the new challenges our customers are facing and uniquely delivers comprehensive protection for both physical and virtual desktops from a single management console.”

Trend Micro Incorporated, a global leader in Internet content security, focuses on securing the exchange of digital information for businesses and consumers. A pioneer and industry vanguard, Trend Micro is advancing integrated threat management technology to protect operational continuity, personal information, and property from malware, spam, data leaks and the newest Web threats.
LONDON – Security vendor Trend Micro has acquired online storage firm Humyo.
Trend Micro didn’t revealed how much it paid for the cloud storage firm.

Humyo, which is based in Leeds, offers both offline and online storage solutions aimed at consumers and businesses alike.

“Humyo’s superior data synchronisation technology – which allows multiple devices including PCs, Macs and smartphones to automatically backup to a common folder in the cloud so that consumer users can easily access their data from whatever device they have in hand – is a clear differentiator that helps to ensure that users’ files are always safe and secure as well as effortlessly organised,” said Eva Chen, CEO of Trend Micro.

“Their online storage – basically a cloud technology – fits into our strategy of providing security from and for the cloud.”

It finally happened to Twitter.

Spammers really ride on the latest trend, and just recently they have turned their attention to micro-blogs such as Twitter. As everyone logs in to Twitter, spammers too, log on to tweet– this time about various weight-loss products/drugs and other tidbits on how to lose weight.

Capitalizing on people’s obsession over the topic of weight, spammers infiltrate users’ accounts to post messages with links connecting to weight-loss drugs. Spam tweets even use TinyURL so that their posts look like the usual harmless tweets, only to redirect victims to spam sites.

According to the Trend Micro Malware Blog, “Hacked Twitter accounts are being used to post messages that promote weight-loss drugs. The messages vary in the stated text, but generally states the same message and are all followed by a link that leads to websites where the drugs are being sold. Searches through Twitter for “$5 acai” yields the posts of users whose accounts were hacked.”

Trend Micro‘s Smart Protection Network blocks these sorts of spams and keeps you safe against these cybercriminals. Trend Micro leverages patent-pending technology to correlate the threat data gathered through a network of proactive e-mail, Web, and file reputation technologies, Web Crawlers, honeypots and global threat sensors of customers, partners, and threat research and support centers to combat even the most sophisticated sequential and blended threats. Built-in feedback loops and communication between Trend Micro products and services ensure automatic and immediate protection against the latest threats and provide “better together” security-much like the neighborhood watch crime-fighting systems that exist today in many communities.

Transcend Teams Up with Trend Micro to Release Antivirus USB Flash Drives.

Transcend Information, Inc., a worldwide leader in storage and multimedia products, today announced its alliance with Trend Micro, Inc., a global leader in Internet content security, to offer advanced Trend Micro USB Security software preloaded on its newest USB flash drive, the JetFlash V15. With this powerful combination of Transcend hardware and industry-leading Trend Micro software, users can now share, store and manage valuable data more safely and securely than ever.

To combat against a rise in Autorun malware that infect removable drives and then spread across corporate networks that Trend Micro threat researchers discovered last year, a unique software program called Trend Micro USB Security was developed specifically to protect against malicious content in files transferred to a USB flash drive. With its easy-to-use interface and simple one-step activation process, Trend Micro USB Security protects the JetFlash V15 from the first moment it is plugged in. If threats are discovered, users will be alerted and all infected files will be quarantined.

“Our USB Security software paired with Transcend’s USB flash drive makes it easy for consumers to add another layer of powerful protection against Internet threats and viruses that could harm their irreplaceable data and files,” said Carol Carpenter, vice president of consumer marketing. “We’re pleased to be able to team with Transcend in delivering smart, easy-to-use security so consumers can enjoy online activities with peace of mind.”

“We look forward to deploying Trend Micro’s USB Security on our JetFlash V15,” said Transcend Vice President Steve Chang. “This is an exciting partnership that ultimately improves the lives of portable storage users by giving them the convenience of storing anything on their JetFlash USB flash drive with confidence that their files are safe from harmful viruses.”

When the JetFlash V15 is plugged into a computer with Internet access, Trend Micro USB Security will automatically download and install the latest security updates directly onto the drive. Thanks to its powerful Trend Micro USB Security built-in software, Transcend’s JetFlash V15 AntiVirus USB Flash Drive can freely be used in any computer without having to worry about malicious data hitching a ride while transferring files.

Transcend’s capless JetFlash V15 flash drive features a retractable USB connector with lock-switch, which makes the drive easier to use and protects it from damage during travel. Its shiny gloss design includes a convenient attachment hook that not only helps prevent accidental loss, but also makes the drive easier to remove from a USB port. With outstanding storage performance, a preloaded, full-featured, 90-day trial version of Trend Micro USB Security, plus Transcend’s renowned global lifetime warranty service, the JetFlash V15 is a feature-packed portable storage device that offers users peace of mind by protecting precious personal data from hackers, viruses or cybercriminals.
