SAN FRANCISCO – Samsung Tuesday announced its new 1TB Spinpoint MT2 2.5-inch internal hard drive. The new drive is suitable for portable storage like portable external hard drives, or could also be used for anything from future HDTVs, home theater systems, set-top boxes, and some laptops.

The new Spinpoint drive uses 333GB per-platter technology and runs at 5400rpm. It also utilizes Samsung’s NoiseGuard technology to reduce unwanted noise, which makes it well-suited for home theater products or other devices that need to run quietly.

Samsung also claims that the Spinpoint MT2 features 20% increased read/write performance and consumes 4% less power consumption compared to similar drives.

And not that you’ll ever need it, but Samsung says that the drive also features shock resistance up to 400G for 2ms in operation mode and up to 800G for 1ms when the power is off.

Unfortunately the drive has a non-standard height dimension, so it will only fit into certain laptops, but the drive may be suitable where space is more available like in TVs.

SAN FRANCISCO – You know those HP Envy 13 and Envy 15 notebooks we were so excited about last year? The ones that look suspiciously like a Macbook Pro, have great hardware and design, have few flaws aside from a very big price sticker? Well, they just got a whole lot more attractive.
The Envy 13 has dropped in price by about $300, and now starts at $1,499. That price gets you a Core 2 Duo SL9300 CPU and Mobility Radeon HD 4330 GPU. Not much of a change on that model, outside of the reduced price.

The Envy 15 is the one that gets the biggest boost. The starting price has been seriously slashed to $1,299 with a Core i5 CPU (Core i7 CPUs are available, too). The standard graphics card is now the excellent Mobility Radeon HD 5830 with 1GB of RAM, a bit of an improvement over the 4830 in the previous model.

Both systems are available for order today from the HP site.

Dell on has started shipping its first rugged laptop with a multitouch display, which can operate in extreme environments and withstand drops, dust and spills.

The Latitude XT2 XFR is also the company’s thinnest and lightest rugged touch-screen laptop, the company said. The laptop measures 38.1mm at its thinnest point, and weighs 2.45kgs with a four-cell battery and solid-state drive. Dell already offers a rugged single-touch-screen laptop, the Latitude E6400 XFR, which has a 14.1-inch screen and weighs 3.87kgs.

The Latitude XT2 XFR laptop, priced starting at US$3,599, comes with a 12.1-inch four-finger-input multitouch display that can be used to record data, manipulate images, zoom into maps or scroll through documents. The screen has a protective layer so that it resists impact damage.

The laptop is designed to meet the US military’s MIL-810G standards, which define a minimum set of conditions under which such laptops can operate. The laptop can withstand rain and a three-foot drop and will operate in temperatures ranging from -10 degrees Fahrenheit (-23 degrees Celsius) to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius). The screen also can be flipped for use like a tablet PC.

Touch and stylus interfaces could help field workers such as sales and service technicians complete forms, create status reports or obtain customer signatures, said Jeremy Bolen, a Dell spokesman.

“Touch screens come in very handy in patrol cars and service vehicles where users can easily interact with the system without it becoming a distraction, unlike a keyboard or mouse,” Bolen said. “Essentially, touch makes data accessible and collection faster in many cases.”

Companies like Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard are shipping PCs with multitouch displays for businesses. The laptops are designed to input or retrieve customer data or manipulate objects that require higher levels of precision, such as sharply edged images in engineering and design applications.

Dell’s laptop is powered by an Intel ultra-low-voltage Core 2 Duo SU9600 chip, which runs at 1.6GHz and includes 3MB of cache. It supports up to 5GB of RAM with solid-state drive storage of up to 160GB. With a six-cell battery the laptop can run for up to six hours. The laptop includes multiple wireless communications options including Wi-Fi networking, mobile broadband options and GPS.

The laptop comes with Microsoft’s Windows Vista OS for now, but the recently released Windows 7 will be added as an option “very soon,” Bolen said.

The XT2 XFR has started shipping in US, Canada, France, Spain, the U.K., Germany and Italy, Bolen said. Dell did not immediately comment on worldwide availability.

With the objective of fusing the idea of taking care of our environment and providing top-notch technology at the same time, Acer introduced the Acer Aspire Timeline Notebook Series with the Aspire 4810T and Aspire 3810T pilot models.

With the objective of fusing the idea of taking care of our environment and providing top-notch technology at the same time, Acer introduced to the local Lifestyle and IT media the new Timeline series of notebooks, Inc., brought to local shores by Acer’s local office, Acer (Philippines), Inc.

Thriving on the fact that it has one of the longest-if not the longest-battery life among notebook computers in the market today, this chic and ultra-modern gadget is out to prove itself as an efficient piece of equipment that allows everyone to perform more digital tasks without fear of using up its power quickly and yet feel environmentally pro-active about it. Excellent energy-saving qualities aside, one also gets better-quality performance and unmatched usability in an eye-catching less-than-one-inch form factor.

The Acer Aspire Timeline AS4810T and the Acer Aspire Timeline AS3810T both bank on the Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 (1.4GHz, 3MB, 800 FSB) processor partnered with the Mobile Intel GS45 Express Chipset to deliver steadfast, unequaled computing functions. And with the 2GB DDR3 memory module for the Aspire 4810T and 3GB DDR3 for the Aspire 3810T that’s both upgradeable to 4GB, multitasking is such a breeze.

Both also carry the Intel Graphics Media accelerator 4500MHD with up to 1759MB DVMT 5.0 (64MB dedicated memory, up to 1695MB shared) for more powerful and life-like images that can be viewed in the Aspire 4810T and Aspire 3810T’s 1366×768 resolution of its high-bright Acer CineCrystal LED-backlit TFT LCD (14 inches for the Aspire 4810T and 13 inches for the Aspire 3810T) display screen. With this kind of graphics quality and display feature, no wonder these two will soon become favorites of mobile cyberwarriors who prefer to go out in the open and carry out their computing tasks at the most convenient and relaxing environments possible (aka, coffee shops and malls).

Given this scenario, what would be more appealing to consumers is that both the Aspire 4810T and Aspire 3810T are both capable of up to three hours of battery life with its six-cell batteries. However, due to the revolutionary Acer PowerSmart Manager, with its centralized control over system-wide power, battery life can extend up to 8 hours long. It’s like charging fully your laptop before leaving the house and not worrying anymore about losing battery power and having problems looking for a recharging station elsewhere, which is pretty scarce. With this wonderful feature, Aspire Timeline notebook series is dubbed as the world’s first Ultra Low Voltage notebooks.

Other energy-saving and environment-friendly features of the Aspire 4810T and Aspire 3810T include the Acer PowerSmart key, a one-touch energy conservation element, and the Acer PowerSmart Adapter, which gives the two laptops the ability to save up to 66% more power when put into sleep mode. The two also have the Laminar Wall Jet Engine design that air-cools the processor and the notebook case for a more comfortable use, especially when you put the laptops well, in your lap.

Some basic differences, though, like in terms of storage, a 250GB SATA hard drive for the Aspire 4810T and 350GB SATA hard drive for the Aspire 3810T, and weight (1.9 kilos for the 4810T and 1.6 kilos for the 3810T), where the latter quality serves as a more persuasive and fascinating feature about the Acer Aspire Timeline series of notebooks, aside from the fact that their super-thin dimensions makes both notebooks as perfect companions that you can bring anywhere.

Designing the Aspire Timeline Notebooks, Acer broke another barrier: creating the finest and lightest notebooks to provide all-day computing. At its thinnest point the Aspire Timeline is just 24mm thick (less than an inch) and thanks to the aluminum cover it’s a featherweight, ranging from 1.6kg for the 13.3-inch model up to just 1.9 kg for the 14-incher, making it both lighter and easier to carry around than anything else. The Aspire Timeline notebooks open up a new dimension where lightness and more time meet and you have total freedom to get things done unhurriedly anywhere you want.

If you want to experience how revolutionary and inspiring the Acer Aspire Timeline Notebook Series – Aspire 4810T and Aspire 3810T are, then head off to the nearest authorized Acer reseller and ask for a quick demo to get hold of one and see how light and thin these babies are, definitely more affordably-priced compared to its competitors. You can also take a sneak preview of these featherweight yet powerful notebooks via www.acer.com.ph.

Given the title “world’s lightest and slimmest 13” notebook” at its debut in CES January 2009, the MSI X340 is 6 mm at its thinnest and 20 mm at its widest, weighing 1.3 kilograms with battery.

MSI makes its fashion statement through the X-Slim series. The chic design of the X340 frees notebooks from the monotone and makes them works of art, attracting media eyes worldwide, and making MSI more a notebook boutique than an IT manufacturer.

The X-Slim embraces a simple and modern design concept and meanwhile features the most advanced multimedia and power saving technologies.

The First 13” Notebook Equipped with a 16:9 Wide Screen
The X340 has a 13” LCD display instead of the usual 12” or smaller sizes. This provides more comfort in reading and operation as well as lighter weight compared to 14” models.

The 16:9 theater ratio provides larger visual area. When watching movies, the black bars on the top and bottom usually found on screens with the 16:10 aspect ratio screen are avoided. This is perfect for playing HD videos at any possible angle, and is ideal for total visual enjoyment.

The X340 is embedded with the LED power-saving backlight technology, which also provides better color fullness and brightness, elevating the total quality of imagery. Furthermore, the lower power usage gives a longer operating time.

Full I/O Ports in a Notebook measured 6mm at its thinnest
The X340 includes full I/O ports to provide users a full connectivity and ease of use. There are two USB sockets, one HDMI, a MIC-in, Headphone Out, D-Sub (VGA), an RJ-45 LAN port and a card reader.

The MIC-in port supports microphone or headphone by auto-detecting which device is used. The friendly design makes exclusive vocal enjoyment sharable. HDMI Digital Terminal Interface offers more than 5 GB of transmitting bandwidth and also removes the complications of multiple cables.

Five Alternatives for Power Saving
The X340 is equipped with MSI’s ECO Engine power management system. Users are free to select from five different modes — office, gaming, movies, presentation, and turbo battery. Through various conditions such as the brightness of the screen and standby timeframe, the power consumption can be much more flexible, providing much more uptime. This escalates the productivity and convenience for users of the X340.

The X340 features the latest Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology, which uses Intel® Core 2 Solo ULV Processors and the Intel® GS45 + ICH9M-SFF Chipset, to deliver long battery life.

All-around, Wireless Connectivity
The X340 is embedded with an IEEE 802.16e WiMAX™ wireless module (optional), which elevates the X340′s wireless performance and allowing the user’s online experience to be faster and more mobile. Users can access the Internet world through WiMAX™, never missing the latest information.

The X340 also has 802.11b /g/n Wi-Fi® wireless capability, covering all the bases when it comes to wireless connectivity protocols.

The X340 also provides Bluetooth capability which can be connected to cellular phones, earbuds, PDAs, and other gadgets. Say goodbye to the fuss of lines and cables!

Pricing
Estimated pricing for MSI X340 when it hits the stores soon is Php 49,999.00. If you need more product information, please visit www.msi.com.tw or call NetEssentials, MSI Notebook’s exclusive distributor in the Philippines at (02) 721-1981 to 83.
