Dell has unveiled its ultraportable XPS 13 laptop, the most compact 13.3-inch Ultrabook featuring an edge-to-edge glass, near “frameless” display, all-day battery life, and the latest innovative technology for a superb overall user experience. Starting at 2.99 lbs.[ii], and less than a quarter-inch at its thinnest point, the XPS 13 combines performance-oriented thoughtful design with the latest Intel technology, such as Rapid Start and Smart Connecti, to enable users to be productive, connected and responsive anywhere.

The latest and most mobile laptop in Dell’s portfolio, the XPS 13 is part of Dell’s high-end XPS brand, which is now 20 percent of Dell’s total consumer laptop business. Revenue for XPS laptops has increased 207 percent over last year when the company re-launched the brand to better meet the needs of today’s mobile professionals.
The XPS 13 delivers second-generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, 128GB and 256GB solid state hard drive options[iii], Intel HD 3000 graphics and a bright high definition WLED 300-nit display for outstanding viewing experiences, packaged in an elegantly-designed, ultraportable laptop.
“The XPS 13 is the culmination of an extensive design and development process focused on creating the best Ultrabook on the planet,” said Jeff Clarke, vice chairman, Global Operations and End User Computing. “It is specifically engineered to help both our consumer and commercial customers be more productive and connected in every way possible. From the edge-to-edge frameless display that packs more screen into a compact body, to the innovative carbon fiber base that is lightweight and cool to the touch, the XPS 13 exemplifies our commitment to offering industry-leading mobile solutions that deliver durability and performance without compromise.”
Purposefully designed and artfully built, the XPS 13 maximizes the Ultrabook experience for users: edge-to-edge display with hardened Gorilla Glass; a full-size backlit keyboard with a large glass touchpad with integrated buttons and multi-gestural support; and up to eight hours, fifty-three minutes of battery life[iv]. All in a package starting at 2.99 lbsii.
The 13.3-inch high definition display with slim bezel fits in a body size similar to the form factor of an 11-inch product, making it the most compact Ultrabook available. (Other 13.3-inch laptops offer the same viewing area but with up to a 15 percent larger footprint.) The carbon fiber composite base extends the design process, offering a premium visual appeal, and is lighter and cooler to the touch than aluminum.
Keeping connected and getting online quickly is now a reality. The XPS 13 is one of the first Ultrabooks to feature Intel Smart Connect technology, which wakes periodically to detect known networks and update calendar and emaili. With solid state drives and Intel Rapid Start technology, the XPS 13 boots in seconds, giving customers the performance of a laptop with the instant gratification experience of a smartphone.
“When Dell began the conversation of what an Ultrabook could be, we carefully considered how to provide customers not only incredible mobility, but also the kind of performance experience you would expect from something much larger,” said Steve Felice, president and Chief Commercial Officer of Dell. “A ‘good-enough’ Ultrabook wasn’t good enough for us. We were committed to developing what an Ultrabook can and should be with the XPS 13 and providing a superior user experience.”
“The XPS 13 represents the most balanced of the Ultrabook class of notebooks to hit the market so far”, said Rob Enderle, Analyst for the Enderle Group. “Ultrabooks started by forcing people to make a choice between beauty and practicality and Dell took the time to make sure their offering would not only be very attractive, but address the critical needs of business and education buyers as well. Perhaps the best way to describe the XPS 13 is ‘beautifully uncompromised’.”
Dell went a step further with the XPS 13 to create appeal for all customers – for work and for play – and has made it easier for IT departments to choose laptops that offer the security and services they value in a fit and finish executives and employees demand. Enterprise-friendly features include standard Trusted Platform Module for BitLocker Data Encryption and optional ProSupport[v] after-sales service and Configuration Services such as asset tagging.
Understanding its customers’ need to purchase responsible products, Dell designed the XPS 13 with the environment in mind. Its energy-efficient LED displays have no mercury or arsenic and Dell eliminated harmful toxins such as Brominated Flame Retardants and Polyvinyl Chloride (BFR/PVCs)[vi]. The XPS 13 is shipped in many locations with sustainably harvested bamboo packaging material. Every XPS 13 can be configured to be ENERGY STAR qualified, helping customers reduce energy costs. When the time comes, Dell offers multiple recycling options (learn more at Dell.com/recycling).

Dell’s Philippine office has been certified as ISO 9001:2008 compliant by the International Organization for Standardization, reflecting the company’s commitment to continually meet and exceed customer satisfaction.
“The world of technology companies hinges upon a sound internationally-accepted operational approach to meet the needs of customers globally,” said Richard Teo, president of Dell Philippines. “Establishing reliable processes and training our team members in accordance with these requirements is fundamental to the credibility of our company. The independent validation by ISO provides peace of mind to customers that Dell is committed to sound management practices that are thoroughly measured and evaluated in order to exceed customer satisfaction.”
To earn the ISO 9001:2008 certification, Dell was evaluated throughout the enterprise, from operations and information systems to accounting and human resources. The analysis included a thorough audit of systems, policies and practices governing operations, confirming that these processes are applied with a commitment towards ongoing improvement.
The scope of certification for Dell’s Philippine operations covers all provisions of customer service, support, sales operations and customer care for computers, technology products and solutions.
The ISO certification complements Dell’s stringent internal performance standards. Dell regularly conducts internal evaluations to ensure that all personnel and processes are in compliance with strict ISO quality control measures throughout every department.
Dell’s presence in the Philippines includes an office responsible for sales and marketing of Dell products, solutions and services in the Philippines; a customer contact center operation that provides technical and non-technical customer support services to consumers, small and medium businesses in the U.S., UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand; and Dell Services, which provides business process outsourcing services to the U.S. healthcare market.
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world’s largest developer and publisher of International Standards. It is a network of the national standards institutes of 162 countries, one member per country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system.
ISO is a non-governmental organization that forms a bridge between the public and private sectors. On the one hand, many of its member institutes are part of the governmental structure of their countries, or are mandated by their government. On the other hand, other members have their roots uniquely in the private sector, having been set up by national partnerships of industry associations. ISO enables a consensus to be reached on solutions that meet both the requirements of business and the broader needs of society.

Dell has announced new solutions built on its Fluid Data Architecture to optimize cost, performance and protection as storage scales with a growing organization. Highlighted solutions include its Dell Compellent 16Gbps Fibre Channel interoperability and new Dell EqualLogic Unified storage.
With Dell Compellent, enterprise data is actively, intelligently managed throughout its lifecycle so enterprises can constantly adapt to changing business conditions. Together, a Fluid Data™ architecture, storage virtualization, intelligent software and modular hardware bring unprecedented efficiency, simplicity and security to enterprise storage. Data center resources are utilized to their full potential.
Built-in intelligence and automation ensure data is available when and where it’s needed. And an open, persistent hardware platform scales in line with business needs to protect storage investments over the
long term.
These solutions represent a milestone in Dell’s vision for a Fluid Data Architecture designed to help customers efficiently and flexibly manage data. Dell is uniquely unencumbered by legacy storage technologies and rigid philosophies that do not support customer needs in the Virtual Era. Instead, Dell is focused on the development and acquisition of storage intellectual property that delivers productivity and efficiency gains for highly-virtualized data centers.
“Organizations of all sizes continue to place a priority on boosting IT asset efficiency while improving IT responsiveness to business pressures. Ever greater exploitation of virtualization is a key element in these efforts, and the deployment of flexible and intelligent storage systems is frequently the key to successful efforts,” said Richard Villars, vice president of storage and IT Strategies at IDC.  “Dell’s continued investment in advanced yet cost effective storage solutions along with a continued expansion of its enterprise service and solutions organization, puts the company in a strong position to help IT organizations get the most from their data centers, today, and in the future.”
Dell has demonstrated compatibility between a Dell Compellent Storage Center SAN with Brocade 6510 16Gb Fibre Channel switch and Brocade 1860 16Gb Fabric Adapter. Dell will continue to build on its leadership in enterprise storage by introducing 16Gbps Fibre Channel offerings. This new technology will help customers unleash the power of their SAN environments to support next-generation applications and cloud services. This increased performance will provide organizations investment protection and a future-ready infrastructure capable of overcoming the challenges of enormous data growth. By combining Dell’s Fluid Data architecture with Brocade’s 16Gbps Fibre Channel infrastructure, Dell is delivering high performing SAN solutions that empower customers to stay at the leading edge of technology.
In support of customers’ growing storage demands, Dell has begun shipping the new EqualLogic FS7500, the company’s latest NAS solution that works with EqualLogic PS Series arrays to deliver the only scale-out, unified storage platform for mid-size deployments. The EqualLogic FS7500 uses the Dell Scalable File System, a high-performance, clustered file system based on Dell intellectual property. The Dell Scalable File System architecture incorporates features formerly found only at the very high end including advanced caching, load balancing and multithreading for fast I/O processing.  This is the first step toward Dell’s long-term vision of a uniquely feature-rich, highly-scalable file system.
Customers consolidating applications onto a unified platform are demanding improved flexibility, to react to unanticipated changes in their application environment; flexibility not delivered by legacy unified solutions. As the EqualLogic unified storage platform provides online capacity and performance scaling for both file and block interfaces, customers can easily scale their platform in any dimension to meet business requirements.

Dell has announced new Dell EqualLogic storage solutions and supporting software to help customers address the data management requirements of increasingly dynamic, virtualized data centers. The company also released details of new integration across its storage portfolio with the forthcoming VMware vSphere 5 virtualization and cloud infrastructure platform.

The announcements represent another milestone in the continued evolution of Dell Fluid Data solutions, designed to help customers more effectively manage valuable business information in virtualized data centers.
In support of customers’ growing storage demands, Dell introduced the EqualLogic PS6100 and PS4100 family of virtualized, IP-based storage offerings. Together with new Dell EqualLogic firmware version 5.1, Dell offers customers its next generation of EqualLogic storage solutions that seamlessly integrate into existing environments without downtime or a major overhaul. This helps customers to focus on managing their storage and not the manual process of upgrading infrastructure.
This launch marks the introduction of 2.5-inch drive support for the EqualLogic product line, providing greater density that enables users to store more in less space. Additionally, customers can gain up to 60 percent performance improvement on typical workloads with the EqualLogic PS Series compared to the previous generation EqualLogic arrays.
EqualLogic PS Series arrays, regardless of generation, work together to automatically manage data, load balance across all resources, and expand to meet growing storage needs. Dell provides these capabilities without requiring customers to “rip and replace” their storage environment during each upgrade cycle as they would with other vendors.  New storage arrays include: EqualLogic PS4100 Series; EqualLogic PS6100 Series — designed to provide mid-sized customers with a scalable storage environment, up to 72TB in a single array and 1.2PB in a single group, that can easily accommodate both high-performance and high-capacity drive options. The PS6100 family is ideal for customers looking for a storage solution to support the storage demands of a highly virtualized data center environment where the seamless movement and protection of virtual machines, applications and data is crucial.
With the newly redesigned, compact form factor, PS6100 customers can achieve the same performance for their typical workload using half the number of arrays, and receive 50 percent more expansion capacity when compared with the previous generation EqualLogic arrays.
Dell also has begun shipping the new EqualLogic FS7500, the company’s latest NAS solution that works with EqualLogic PS Series arrays to deliver the only scale-out, unified storage platform for mid-size deployments. The FS7500 uses the Dell Scalable File System, which offers several advanced features including cache monitoring, load balancing and multi-threading for fast I/O processing.
In support of the forthcoming VMware vSphere 5, Dell today introduced a new set of VMware specific enhancements for Dell EqualLogic, Dell Compellent and Dell PowerVault storage customers. These will roll-out through Q3 and Q4.

Dell EqualLogic PS4100 and PS6100 Series and EqualLogic FS7500 are available starting today.

Dell has announced its work with Bing Maps to create a dedicated imagery processing microsite to support Streetside, Bird’s Eye, aerial and satellite image types provided by Bing Maps. Dell’s Modular Data Centers combined with Mellanox InfiniBand networking were the building blocks of the new highly efficient microsite.

“Our goal was to push technological boundaries, to build a cost effective and efficient  microsite,” said Brad Clark, Group Program Manager, Bing Maps Imagery Technologies (BITs), Microsoft Corp. “We ended-up with a no-frills high-performance microsite to deliver complicated geospatial applications that can in effect ‘quilt’ different pieces of imagery into a cohesive mosaic that everyone can access.”
The Bing Maps Boulder team set out to build a powerful, scalable microsite to support image processing for Bing Maps. The challenge was to design a modular outdoor solution that was optimized for power, space, network connectivity and workload performance. Dell’s Data Center Solutions (DCS) team worked in collaboration with Bing Maps’ engineers out of Boulder and networking partner Mellanox to deliver on Microsoft’s vision.
The Bing Maps microsite uses Dell’s innovative cooling, which uses free-air with evaporative cooling technology to help deliver world-class efficiency and could achieve Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) as low as 1.03.  PUE is a measure of how efficiently a microsite uses its power; specifically, how much of the power is actually used by the computing equipment (in contrast to cooling and other overhead).
“In working with Microsoft, we’ve been able to produce a highly innovative and cost effective microsite to house their world class imagery offerings,” said Roy Guillen, vice president and general manager, Data Center Solutions Group, Dell. “We saw an opportunity to push the envelope and we’ll be using this experience to continually drive even more efficiency for our customers.”
“Mellanox is proud to work with Dell and Microsoft to help build the new Bing Maps computing site,” said Eyal Waldman, chairman, president and CEO of Mellanox Technologies. “Bing Maps takes advantage of Mellanox’s end-to-end InfiniBand performance, economics, and ease-of-use to deliver high efficiency. We look forward to helping other business customers realize the benefits of our interconnect technologies in more Web 2.0 applications.”
