By Fei on February 10, 2011

February 10, 2011

D-Link, one of the world’s biggest suppliers of network products, today launched the DSM-380 Boxee Box Network Multiplayer. Featuring a powerful Intel Atom CE4100 processor which allows video playback resolution of up to 1080p, the winner of the 2010 Design and Engineering Consumer Electronics Innovation Award is the first media device of its kind capable of playing most popular media file formats from a
home network.

“High-definition television sets (HDTVs) are becoming a common sight in the home, yet the amount of High Definition (HD) content available is often limited to expensive Blu-ray discs and satellite services,” said Mr Desmond Toh, Marketing Director, D-Link International Pte Ltd. “The Boxee takes the HDTV experience to the next level by letting a wealth of free, high-quality HD content be streamed, organised and played on their HDTV through a home Internet connection.”

Practically unlimited content on your TV

Allowing owners to stream content from an existing pool of free content providers such as YouTube and CNN, the Boxee also gives users the option of syncing their own collection of downloaded
multimedia content.

Owners can simply connect an external hard drive or a flash storage drive via USB, or a Secured Digital (SD) card to share media files from their computer over a home network. The device will automatically sort and present it in a media library complete with cover artwork, optional subtitles and synopses.

The Boxee is the first media centre to integrate with social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, allowing users to recommend movies, TV shows and songs to their friends and also see which shows they are watching. The set’s open system also allows news feeds and multimedia recommendations to be downloaded instantly from content providers as soon as it is switched on.

Featuring 802.11n Wireless N support and an easy-to-connect HDMI interface, the Boxee helps to eliminate the typical jumble of unsightly cables.

By simply plugging in the power and connecting a HDMI cable, the Boxee is ready to deliver high quality video and audio to TV. Its 10-foot user interface, which is designed for HDTV screens, makes it easy for users to control the device from the comfort of their couch, while an intuitive remote control featuring a QWERTY style keyboard for fast and easy input allows them to navigate through menus with complete ease.

The D-Link DSM-380 Boxee will be launched in Q1 2011.

D-Link launches new family of NAS

By Fei on January 3, 2011

D-Link, a supplier of network products, launched the first member of its new family of network attached storages (NAS), the two-bay DNS-320 ShareCentre Pulse. The high-performance device features an assortment of new features including a built-in web file server and RAID migration function.

Apart from accessing files using File Transfer Protocol (FTP), the DNS-320 is equipped with a built-in web server to allow users to effortlessly and securely download documents, photos, and other multimedia files remotely over the Internet from any location. Once configured, users can simply log into their personal ShareCenter device using a web user interface to view a list of available files. A USB port on the front of the device can be used to connect external USB storage devices, USB printers, or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to ensure it can be properly shut down in the case of a power outage.

Meanwhile, the availability of four different hard drive modes (Standard, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1) allows users to choose the configuration best suited to their needs. The Standard mode creates two separately accessible hard drives, the JBOD combines both drives to create a single, easy to use volume, Raid 0 combines both drives in a “striped” configuration to provide the highest performance when using a Gigabit Ethernet connection while RAID 1 creates a copy of backed-up data on both drives for maximum protection.

The DNS-320 allows up to two internal 3.5-inch Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives to be installed simply by sliding them into the allocated device slots. Once this is completed, the system can be powered up and ready to use. Equipped with a built-in media server, the DNS-320 allows media files to be streamed to any media device that supports Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) such as a PlayStation 3 or Microsoft Xbox360.

D-Link has announced that it is the first in the industry to double router security protection by incorporating both CAPTCHA and DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) to guard against hacking, viruses and other malicious Web attacks.

“We’re excited to be the first in the market to offer such double security capability in our routers,” said Desmond Toh, Marketing Director, D-Link International Pte Ltd. “By incorporating both DNSSEC and CAPTCHA initiatives, D-Link routers now facilitate another layer of the latest security technology while protecting Internet users against cache poisoning and other cyber attacks and warding off web hacking and phishing.”

DNSSEC is a suite of Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) specifications that adds security to the Internet’s Domain Name System (DNS) to provide assurance that the information received from a Domain Name Server is authentic. The security extensions are designed to protect the DNS from cache poisoning attacks, which can occur when hackers corrupt DNS data stored on recursive name servers to redirect queries to malicious sites.

DNSSEC applies digital signatures to DNS data to authenticate the data’s origin and verify its integrity as it moves across the Internet and can provide users with effective verification that their applications, such as Web or email, are using the correct addresses for servers they want to reach.

In mid-2009, D-Link integrated Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart (CAPTCHA) into its popular home and small office routers to thwart worms designed to access a router and alter the victim’s DNS records to divert traffic toward the attacker’s network.

CAPTCHA is a challenge-response test that ensures that a response during a user logon is not computer-generated but instead is truly entered by a human hand, by requiring a user to manually enter a small amount of text displayed in an image to help prevent automated registration and fraud.

To further consider security while future-proofing its routers, D-Link is migrating to IPv6 certification. With the growing number of Internet-capable devices on the market – including mobile, media, and storage – the pool of IPv4 address has dropped to six percent and is expected to run out sometime in 2011. While this is a major motivation for IPv6, other improvements are also realized.  The IPv6 specification specifies certain security measures that were not defined in IPv4, such as IPSec, which is a method of authenticating and encrypting data transferred between pairs of hosts.  Although it was possible to implement IPSec with IPv4, it was not part of the specification.  IPSec is a requirement in the IPv6 specification.

D-Link has begun the transition to IPv6 by participating in the ‘IPv6 Logo Testing Program’ to assure that its products support transitional technologies and provide IPv6 connectivity. All new D-Link routers currently ship with the “IPv6 Ready Phase II” certification and logo.

The DNSSEC, CAPTCHA and IPv6 features are currently available on most currently shipping D-Link’s routers, with more being updated. Visit www.dlink.com for availability of firmware updates.

D-Link, a supplier of network products, has introduced the D-Link DGS-1210 Smart III Switch Series which integrates more management and security functions including D-Link’s Safeguard Engine. This feature, according to the company, enhances the robustness of the new switches and increases the overall network serviceability, reliability and availability, by taking the extra step to identify unwanted interruptions caused by viruses to prevent equipment downtime. These switches also feature the Auto Voice VLAN to ensure that bandwidth for voice-related functions on a voice-ready network is set at the highest priority.

Equipped with a complete lineup of Layer 2 (L2) features, the DGS-1210 switches include Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) Snooping which prevents the host on a local network from receiving traffic for a multicast group they have not explicitly joined, Port Mirroring, Spanning Tree which prevents bridge loops in multiple connection in a network and ensures communication remains constant, and Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) which controls the bundling of several physical ports together to form a single logical channel. The IEEE 802.3x Flow Control function allows servers to directly connect to the switch for fast and reliable data transfer.

The DGS-1210 switches are also equipped with D-Link’s “green friendly” technology that allows the devices to save power without sacrificing operational performance or functionality. By incorporating a special chipset developed by Advanced Silicon Technology, a company which specializes in high-performance and high-density full-chip layouts, this chipset supports and supplements the  DGS-1210’s firmware to allow power to be saved by link status and cable length.

Both cameras also feature support for 3GPP mobile surveillance, allowing users to view live video feed on the go from a compatible Internet-ready mobile phone or PDA with a 3GPP player installed. The DCS-5605 is Ethernet-enabled, while the DCS-5635 offers both Ethernet and 802.11n wireless interfaces.

Designed for the remote monitoring of the home, office and other spaces, the DCS-5605 and DCS-5635 feature precise high-speed motorized pan, tilt and optical/digital zoom for extensive monitoring and object tracking. Their 10x optical zoom delivers a high level of detail necessary to identify faces, license plate numbers and other important details that are difficult to distinguish using only digital zoom. They are also equipped with Infra-Cut Removable Filter (ICR) for clearer and better vision in low-light environments. Both cameras are lightweight, tipping the scales at 810 grams and 855 grams, respectively.

With support for security protocols such as WEP and WPA/WPA2, the DCS-5605 and DCS-5635 are able to establish secure connections to a wireless network. To maximize bandwidth efficiency and improve image quality, both feature real-time video compression in MJPEG, MPEG-4, and H.264 formats. The H.264 codec can reduce the size of a video stream by up to 80% compared to Motion JPEG. Thus, less network bandwidth and storage space is required. Both cameras will be launched in September 2010.
