January 30, 2012
Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) has announced the findings of its January Symantec Intelligence Report, which shows that spammers are using holidays and major events to make their mail more appealing.
Symantec Intelligence has seen more than 10,000 unique domain names compromised with a redirect script written in PHP that contains a reference to the New Year in the file name.  These redirect scripts were hosted on compromised Web sites and links to these were included in spam emails, which were subsequently blocked by Symantec.cloud.

To further entice recipients to open their messages, spammers used additional social engineering techniques by including parameters in the URL to suggest that the destination is a social networking site.
Symantec Intelligence expects to see spammers taking advantage of other upcoming “calendar events” with one of the most important traditional Chinese New Year celebrations starting this week and continuing for several days,  as well as the fast-approaching Valentine’s Day.
“We also expect to see plenty of spam and malware taking advantage of some of the major upcoming sporting events this year. We are already seeing references to the Summer Olympics in London as part of 419 or advance fee fraud messages,” said Paul Wood, senior intelligence analyst, Symantec.
“By relating their mails to widely-celebrated holidays and current events with global interest, spammers and malware authors can (at first glance at least) make their messages more interesting, and increase the chance of recipients visiting spam Web sites or becoming infected,” Wood said.
During December, global spam levels dropped, but in January gradually returned to similar levels as in November 2011, which is still lower than the 2011 average.
Other Report Highlights:
Spam: In January 2012, the global ratio of spam in email traffic rose by 1.3 percentage points since December 2011, to 69.0 percent (1 in 1.45 emails). This follows a more noticeable drop in December when spam fell by 2.8 percentage points to 67.7 percent. The recent increase means that spam has almost returned to the same level as in November 2011.
Phishing: In January, the global phishing rate increased by 0.06 percentage points, taking the average to one in 370.0 emails (0.27 percent) that comprised some form of phishing attack.
E-mail-borne Threats: The global ratio of email-borne viruses in email traffic was one in 295.0 emails (0.33 percent) in January, a decrease of 0.02 percentage points since December 2011. In January, 29.0 percent of email-borne malware contained links to malicious Web sites, unchanged since December 2011.
Web-based Malware Threats: January saw an average of 2,102 Web sites each day harboring malware and other potentially unwanted programs including spyware and adware; a decrease of 77.4 percent since December 2011.
Endpoint Threats: The most frequently blocked malware for the last month was WS.Trojan.H. WS.Trojan.H is generic cloud-based heuristic detection for files that posses characteristics of an as yet unclassified threat. Files detected by this heuristic are deemed by Symantec to pose a risk to users and are therefore blocked from accessing the computer.
The Education sector became the most spammed industry sector in January, with a spam rate of 71.0 percent.  The spam rate for the Chemical & Pharmaceutical sector was 69.0 percent, compared with 68.7 percent for IT Services, 68.4 percent for Retail, 68.9 percent for Public Sector and 68.2 percent for Finance.  The Public Sector remained the most targeted by phishing activity in January, with one in 99.1 emails comprising a phishing attack.
Phishing levels for the Chemical & Pharmaceutical sector reached one in 838.0 and one in 647.8 for the IT Services sector, one in 529.4 for Retail, one in 169.4 for Education and one in 253.7 for Finance.  With one in 90.2 emails being blocked as malicious, the Public Sector remained the most targeted industry in January.  The virus rate for the Chemical & Pharmaceutical sector reached one in 381.3 and one in 399.4 for the IT Services sector; one in 407.1 for Retail, one in 138.3for Education and one in 236.7 for Finance.
The spam rate for small to medium-sized businesses (1-250) was 68.9%, compared with 69.1% for large enterprises (2500+). Phishing attacks targeting small to medium-sized businesses (1-250) accounted for one in 225.2 emails, compared with one in 410.9 for large enterprises (2500+). Malicious email-borne attacks destined for small to medium-sized businesses (1-250) accounted for one in 277.3 emails, compared with one in 281.5 for large enterprises (2500+).
The January Symantec Intelligence Report provides greater detail on all of the trends and figures noted above, as well as more detailed geographical and vertical trends.

Having spent much of the year battling data breaches that led to huge information and financial loss, the security industry was likely relieved to see 2011 come to a close. In its annual threat roundup report, Trend Micro (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704) wraps 2011 as “The Year of Data Breaches,” after witnessing large, well-known companies succumb to targeted data breach attacks that not only stained reputations, but caused them significant collateral damage.
Authored by Trend Micro threat researchers, this year’s report revisits past predictions, and summarizes notable threat incidents and security wins throughout 2011.
The mobile threat landscape reached new levels of maturity in 2011. Trend Micro threat researchers tracked a staggering spike in the volume of mobile malware, especially those targeting the Android platform. RuFraud and DroidDreamLight — just two of the most notorious Android malware variants — took much of the spotlight, causing millions of users lost data and money.
The year 2011 was a profitable year for social media spammers and scammers who leveraged the trending topics of social networking sites to improve upon their social engineering and hacking tactics, stealing the data of millions of social networkers worldwide. Consequently, regulators have started demanding that social networking sites implement policies and mechanisms to protect the privacy of their users.
While the number of publicly reported vulnerabilities decreased from 4,651 in 2010 to 4,155 in 2011, exploit attacks evolved with higher complexity and sophistication. Exploit attacks in 2011 were targeted, original, and well controlled, the most notable of which set their sights on CVE-2011-3402, CVE-2011-3544, and CVE-2011-3414, along with a couple of Adobe product zero-day vulnerabilities that were exploited in the wild.
Finally, despite an aggressive cybercriminal landscape, Trend Micro, along with its industry partners and law enforcement authorities achieved some remarkable and strategic wins this year. One of them Operation Ghost Click – reached success after five years of stealth tracking and working closely with the FBI. Trend Micro, the only security company that was involved, was able to assist the FBI in what was noted as the biggest cybercriminal takedown in history.
“Reflecting back on 2011, I am very proud of what we’ve achieved. But our work is never done. With 3.5 new threats created every second, and as businesses and consumers take the journey to the cloud, the risk of data and financial loss are greater than ever,” said Myla Pilao, Director of Core Technology, Trendlabs Marketing.  “As a company (and as an industry), we must continue to evolve and create better, data-centric security products for the post-PC era where users need greater visibility and assurance into who is accessing their data, when, where and how.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Most of us use a photo editor for touch-up work–fixing red eye, straightening a crooked photo, perhaps even some color correction. Last week, for example, I explained some simple ways to clean up a portrait by removing red eye, whitening teeth, and erasing skin blemishes. But programs like Adobe Photoshop Elements, Corel Paint Shop Pro, and GIMP can do so much more. What if you wanted to add a reflection to a photo, for example, as if your scene were surrounded by water? Today I’ll show you how to do it using Photoshop Elements, and it’ll take about five minutes.
Expand Your Canvas

Suppose you have a photo like this one: A shot of the New York skyline that I recently took from atop Rockefeller Center.

I would like to add a reflection of the skyline to the bottom of the photo, as if all of Manhattan is sitting at the edge of a river. (Manhattan does sit at the edge of a river–two of them, in fact–but not from this particular vantage point.)

Our first step is to expand the canvas in which the photo is sitting, is to give us some more room to work. Choose Image, Resize, Canvas Size, and then set the new height to 150 percent. In the Anchor section, click the Up arrow, which tells Photoshop to put the existing part of the photo at the top of the canvas and add the new part to the bottom (after you do that, the Up arrow will disappear, as you can see here). Click OK.

Copy and Paste

We now have a larger canvas–the bottom of the photo is a blank white background–but you probably can’t see it yet. To get a better view, zoom out by pressing the Alt key and scrolling the mouse wheel until you can see the entire canvas. Alternately, you can zoom using the Magnifying Glass tool, second from the top of the toolbar.

Next, we need to copy the part of the photo that will be reflected in the water at the bottom of the photo. To do that, click the Rectangular Marquee tool (fifth cubby from the top of the toolbar) and use it to select the bottom half of the original photo. Copy this to the clipboard (Edit, Copy).

Before we can put this “reflection” in the bottom of the photo, we need to flip it. Choose File, New, Image from Clipboard and it’ll appear in a new window. Choose Image, Rotate, Flip Vertical, and you’ll have a copy of Manhattan that is properly reflected.

Select the entire image (press Ctrl-A) and then copy it to the clipboard (Ctrl-C). Switch back to the original photo and press Ctrl-V to paste it into the photo as a new layer. Click the Move tool (in the top cubby in the toolbar), then select the image and drag it to the bottom of the photo, so it snaps in place. It should now look something like this.

Creative Erasing

We’re almost done. All that’s left is to apply some creative erasing so that the bottom of the photo looks like a reflection that naturally fades into the water. Click the Eraser tool (16th from the top of the toolbar) and set the size in the Tool Options palette atop the screen. Set the size to be roughly the same as the reflected section of the photo. Then put the mouse pointer at the bottom of the photo (so the eraser will affect the lower half of the reflection). Click and drag it to erase the bottom of the scene, being careful to draw the eraser in a straight line.

Finally, visit the Layer palette on the right side of the screen and reduce the opacity of the reflection layer until you like the look of the photo. That’s it–save your work. Your final photo should look something like mine.

BANGALORE- Twitter has acquired Internet security firm Dasient, the Sunnyvale, California startup said on its blog on Monday.

Dasient, which describes itself as a cloud-based Web antimalware technology company, introduced in 2010 a service to protect advertisement networks and publishers from malicious ads.

“Over the last year, we have been very active in securing the ads and content of the some of the industry’s largest ad networks and web sites,” Neil Daswani, the company’s co-founder and chief technology officer, said in a blog post.

Before that in 2009, the company launched its web antimalware platform, capable of scanning URLs (uniform resource locators) and websites for the presence of harmful content.

The acquisition fits with Twitter’s plans to expand revenue from advertising including promoted Twitter messages and accounts.

By joining Twitter, Dasient will be able to apply its technology and team to the world’s largest real-time information network, Daswani said. The Dasient team is joining Twitter’s “revenue engineering” team, he said.

Twitter said in a message that “Dasient is joining the flock!”, and referred to Daswani’s blog post. Financial details were not disclosed. Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for information on how it plans to use Dasient’s technology and services.

As part of the merger, Dasient is winding down its business and is no longer able to accept new customers. The company, which was founded in 2008, was funded by Google Ventures among others.

Twitter acquired earlier this month Summify, a startup that summarizes content in people’s Google, Facebook and Twitter feeds and delivers a daily digest through email, on a website or to a user’s iPhone.
